About the event
August is here and that means it’s the start of Black Philanthropy Month, which celebrates black led nonprofits and black benefiting nonprofits. We get a check in both of those boxes, so does that mean we get to celebrate twice?? Absolutely! The number 28 is especially significant because... August 28, 1955 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by three white men, which became a "flashpoint in the civil rights movement." August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, D.C. August 28, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. The storm, which devastated New Orleans, inordinately impacted many of the city's black residents. August 28, 2008 Then-Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black man to ever with the nomination and bid for presidency. So as a result, we ask that you give $28 or more to commemorate our history and philanthropic mission. Hitting our $1,500 goal will provide funding in support of our social emotional learning curriculum, after school programs, and STEM enrichment programs. Give by 8/21 to receive a thank you gift in the mail. RSVP for our closing virtual celebration.
